The County Clerk is the clerk of the County Commission,
and our office performs many duties. Our office prepares the agenda for the county
commission meeting and publishes it for the Commissioners and the public, after
the meeting we compile the minutes of the meeting and keep them on file for anyone
to see. We collect a variety of taxes including Beer, Hotel/motel, Litigation and
Sales tax on vehicles and boats. We also accept or issue Notary Public applications,
Marriage, business, Drivers, Hunting/Fishing and Pawn/title pledge license.
To get a Marriage license, both parties must appear in our office, and they must
provide us with their drivers license, a state issued picture ID, or their birth
certificate and social security card. A marriage license fee is $93.50 or if they
choose to take a premarital preparation course of at least four hours from a qualified
instructor, the price drops to $33.50. We have a great variety of license plates,
and more have been proposed, such as one for NASCAR, Volunteer firefighters, Wildflower,
Horticulture, Choose Life, Girl Scouts, Hermitage, and the Honeybee.
To have a plate for your organization you must have one thousand or more applicants
and pay their $35.00 fee before they are approved, and the organization makes up
their own design. We also issue handicapped placards, to get one you must have a
form completed by you doctor and present the form to us with the required fee. This
office is anxious to provide Giles County with all services that we can provide
by telephone, E-mail or in person.
County Clerk Carol Wade has announced a new service being
provided by the office. The County Clerk's office has been designated as a Passport
Acceptance Agent for the United States Department of State. We are very exited about
providing this service and are still learning the process. To apply for a passport,
an individual must provide proof of US citizenship by bringing in their certified
birth certificate, proof of identity by providing your drivers license, two recent
identical passport photographs, and the fee. The passport application must be completed
but it has to be signed and sworn to before the passport agent. In general it takes
about six weeks for a passport to be processed. The fee for a passport is $85.00.
a person may request expedited service on their application, but it is our understanding
that it still takes up to two weeks to receive the processed passport, and the fee
to expedite is $60.00 in addition to the regular passport fee We are still learning
more about the process and are very happy to be able to provide this service to
the people of Giles County.

Kay Gibbons is currently serving as Register of Deeds in Giles County.
There is one deputy, Tammy Helton. The Office of Register of Deeds is one
of the oldest established offices in county government. As most people
think of this office, they think of it as being the office where a deed is
recorded--which is correct--this was the primary reason this office was
created, however, this office does much more. Any transaction pertaining
to real estate is recorded, such as sales contracts, sales agreements,
probated wills along with the final order signed by a judge, orders,
leases, mortgages (known as "Deeds of Trust" or "Trust Deeds", fixture
filings (which mainly deal with mobile homes and heat pumps), judgments,
liens, subdivision plats, notice of completions, bonds, charters, releases
and greenbelts. Military discharges are also recorded in this office. The
books in the Register of Deeds office start in 1896. Records before that
date, as early as 1810, are located in the Old Records department located
on the third floor in the courthouse.
The office became computerized in 1998. All documents are indexed back to
January 1993. Because of computerization, processing time on all documents
is much faster and documents are available online to those who subscribe to
the website www.titlesearcher.com Records from January 1993 to present
are available on the website and images, not indexes, for deed records are
scanned back to 1966. These records are mostly accessed by titlesearchers
and attorneys. There are 3 public workstations available for use.
Searchers come to the office on a daily basis to obtain information on real
estate located in Giles County.

The office of Trustee is a four year
term, and the Trustee serves three primary functions.
They consist of collecting all county property taxes, keeping a fair regular
account of all money received, investing temporarily idle County funds and in addition
the Trustee disburses sales tax revenues, the Trustee must also keep a detailed
account of these transactions. My staff
and I invite each of you to drop by the office at any time, and we hope that you
find our service to you to be courteous and accommodating. |

The Assessor's Office is responsible for the appraisal of all property, real and
personal for taxation in Giles County. The field appraisal work is done from October
through March every year at which time new construction or changes to the owner's
property is recorded for the tax roll. This Office is also responsible for working
the deeds that are recorded in the Register's Office that would change property
to new ownership and also effect changes on the tax maps of the County. This Office
is responsible to see that all changes made in the County for taxation purposes
are turned over to the Trustee's Office for tax collection. Every six years county-wide
reappraisals are done, with cooperation from the state, to reassess and update all
properties. New square foot costs and acreage values are set at that time. |

Crystal Gibson Greene was elected as Circuit Court Clerk in August of 2006 to serve
a 4 year term. Six full time and one part time deputies and the clerk, staff the
office of Circuit Court. Each deputy specializes in a certain area of the office
but all are cross-trained to more efficiently serve our community.
In January of 1990 our office became computerized. All records prior to this date
can be found in court docket books located in the Clerk's office. Our office handles
all General Sessions Criminal, Civil, Juvenile and Child Support Cases filed in
Giles County. We also handle all Circuit Criminal, Circuit Civil and Circuit Child
Support. All Grand Jury Indictments are filed in our office and become public record
once papers are served on the defendant. We also select and empanel jurors to serve
on a six-month term of jury duty.
These jurors are randomly selected from Tennessee Drivers License holders that are
residents of Giles County. The Circuit Court is responsible for receipting and disbursing
the millions of dollars collected through our court annually. Much of the money
collected through our court is turned over to our County while other is paid to
various state agencies. In addition to the above our office would like to be helpful
to the citizens and business owners in our area. We offer a list of current worthless
check offender's, which may be helpful to cut down on loss of revenue to our local
businesses. To be added to our mailing list for this printout please contact us
at the number below. |
